About the VAT and Sales Tax Calculator
'Add tax to a price' takes a price before tax and gives the tax and the total. 'Remove tax from a total' splits a price that already includes tax into the net price and the tax. Choose your country in the menu at the top: the calculator then starts with that country's usual rate (US sales tax, UK VAT, Canadian GST/HST, Australian GST, EU VAT, Japanese consumption tax, Indian GST or Korean VAT) and shows preset buttons for common rates. You can always type any other rate. Choosing South Korea also shows two Korea-specific tools: the value-added ratio and the VAT of a simplified taxpayer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the value-added ratio? (South Korea)
It is the share of sales created by the business itself: (sales - purchases) ÷ sales × 100. For example, with sales of 10 million and purchases of 7 million, the value added is 3 million and the ratio is 30%.
How is VAT payable by a simplified taxpayer calculated? (South Korea)
VAT payable = supply price (sales including VAT) × industry value-added ratio × 10%. The ratio is set by law and can change, so look up the latest figure for your industry on the Korean National Tax Service website and type it in. Purchase tax credits, payment exemptions and penalties are not included.
How do I add tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate to get the tax, then add it to the price. Example at 20%: a price of 100 gives 20 tax and a total of 120.
How do I take tax out of a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. Example at 20%: 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100, so the tax is 20. Do not simply take 20% of 120, which would give 24.
Are the preset rates exact?
They are common standard rates and, for the US, state base rates only; cities and counties add their own tax, and many goods have reduced or zero rates. Tax rules change, so check the current rate with your tax authority for anything important.
Why is the amount off by a small number?
Rounding methods differ and can cause a difference of about one unit. This calculator rounds to the nearest whole number.
Is what I enter stored on a server?
