About the Korean Age Calculator
Korea used three ways to count age. Since June 28, 2023, Korean law and administration use the international system (called man-nai: 0 at birth, +1 each birthday). Enter your birth date and a reference date (today by default) to see your international age together with your year age, your traditional Korean age, your zodiac animal, the weekday you were born, the number of days you have lived and your next birthday. Change the reference date to find out how old you will be next year.
Frequently asked questions
How is international age (man-nai) calculated?
You are 0 at birth and add one year on each birthday. Subtract the birth year from the reference year, then subtract one if your birthday has not happened yet this year.
What is the difference between international age, year age and Korean age?
Year age is the reference year minus the birth year, and traditional Korean age is year age plus one (everyone is 1 at birth and ages up every January 1). Some laws, such as military service and youth protection rules, still use year age, so check the rule that applies to you.
Which birthday does someone born on February 29 celebrate?
In years that are not leap years, this calculator counts the birthday on March 1, following the period rules of the Korean Civil Act.
How is the zodiac animal chosen?
It is based on the birth year in the Gregorian calendar, matched to the 12 animals (rat, ox, tiger, ...). People born in January or February before Lunar New Year are sometimes counted in the previous year's animal, so treat this as a guide.
