Are my images uploaded to a server?

Which format gives the smallest file?
For photos, WebP or JPEG is usually smallest. PNG is lossless, so it only gets smaller if you reduce the dimensions; it suits screenshots and images with lots of text.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas turn white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Does it work with animated GIFs?
An animated GIF is saved as a still image of the first frame.
The result is bigger than the original.
Images that are already well compressed can grow when compressed again. In that case the tool says the original is smaller and lets you download the original.
